The Best Public High Schools in Charlotte

Are you researching high schools in Charlotte?

Charlotte Mecklenburg schools are some of the best in the state, but like any huge school district, the quality varies from school-to-school. There are dozens of variables that factor into how "good" a school is at the end of the day, and of course, that superlative is totally subjective. Please note that Hendrix Properties is making no claims about what we think is best or most - we just want to pass all the relevant information along to you that our clients have found helpful in the past.

What makes a high school "good?" Attributes like class size, facilities, faculty experience, and AP classes offered are all part of the puzzle, but they're just a part. These are the six "best high schools in Charlotte" as determined by rankings, parent feedback, and journalists alike.

1. Ardrey Kell High School

No list of the Best High Schools in Charlotte is complete without a mention of Ardrey Kell High. Actually located in the Ballantyne area, Ardrey Kell has been named by U.S. News and World Report as one of the top 20 high schools in the entire state of North Carolina. It's a huge school which means relatively high levels of diversity, available student activities, and resources such as counselors and college prep. Over 60% of the student body at Ardrey Kell takes AP classes, too, which is a strong indicator of college preparedness. The school has a reputation for excellent teachers and also has a strong athletics program.

2. Providence High School

Located in south Charlotte, Providence High School has been known for decades as one of the "best" schools in the Charlotte area. It's rated Top 200 in the entire country for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) education and tests indicate that students at Providence High have incredibly strong levels of "college readiness" in math and English. The facilities at the large school are second to none as students enjoy every athletic field imaginable as well as an engineering building, a greenhouse, and even a swimming pool. For livable location, it's hard to beat Providence High School as a public alternative to private.

3. William Amos Hough High School

It's important to remember that some of the best schools in the CMS system aren't actually in Charlotte-proper. "Hough" High, for example, is located near Lake Norman in Cornelius. In just a few short years since opening, it's become one of the fastest-growing, highest-scoring schools in the county. It's a huge school, and in addition to dozens of Honors/AP classes, students have the option to take some pretty cool electives like Marketing or Apparel Development. If you live near the lake and are looking to send your kids to public school, this is the place.

4. Myers Park High School

If you want to live as centrally as possible to Uptown Charlotte and send your child to a public high school, Myers Park High is likely top of the list. Surrounding neighborhoods are exclusive, and for good reason: MPHS is one of the best high schools in the city. While test scores and AP participation are only a little above average here, the school has a reputation for serious diversity and it's enormous, hosting almost 3,000 students a day. The campus itself is built like a college (complete with a "quad!") and Myers Park's sports teams consistently compete at the top level in North Carolina. Holistically, this school is a standout.

5. South Mecklenburg High School

South Mecklenburg is a surprisingly diverse school for this part of Charlotte. Located in the southwestern part of town, it's student body of nearly 3,000 students gives everyone here an opportunity to find out what they're into. Clubs include an Aviation Club, a Greenhouse Club, and even a Photography Club, and students here have high levels of AP participation and passing. For parents looking to live outside of Ballantyne but still within striking distance of a well-respected, established public school, South Meck is a good place to start.

6. David W. Butler High School

Butler is another school located outside of Charlotte-proper. It's situated on nearly 75 acres of bucolic land in the gorgeous community of Matthews just to the SE of CLT. Butler has received numerous accolades over the years including being named a "School of Distinction" and even being named the #1 high school in all of the greater Charlotte area by US News and World Report in 2014. The graduation rate is nearly 93% which is far higher than the national average of only 80%, and students here can take over 25 AP classes and over 40 Honors classes. Additionally, the school is known statewide for its Fine Arts and music programs, too.
