Why People Want to Live in East Charlotte

East Charlotte was one of the first parts of the city that experienced growth outside the Uptown perimeter. For a long time, Independence Boulevard was one of the most heavily-trafficked retail areas in the city. Today Independence is becoming a freeway, but the neighborhoods in East Charlotte continue to grow. Aside from easy access to the interstate and Uptown, the eastside offers a lot of history, affordable housing, and plenty of retail and restaurants to boot.

This is a large part of town and the farther away from Charlotte, the more rural. Areas like Newell and Mint Hill are decidedly un-urban, offering large lots and even acreage if that’s what you need. Close to town, East Charlotte neighborhoods such as Plaza Midwood, Grier Heights, and Shamrock are experiencing a boom, becoming hotbeds for nightlife, “hipsters,” and of course, investors. Harris Boulevard is one of the city’s biggest and most popular roads and runs all the way through East CLT from Matthews in the Southeast to the University area.

Features, Restaurants & Retail of East Charlotte

Because the “East side” of Charlotte is so large, retail and restaurants here are varied. Eastland Mall was once a retail hub in Charlotte but today the area where it once stood is surrounded by strip malls and plenty of easily-accessible public transportation.

The greater Plaza Midwood area, it’s worth mentioning, is one of the hottest in all of Charlotte. The imminently walkable Central Avenue Business District is teeming with hot eateries and bars, and the streetcar may actually one day take PM residents all the way into Uptown. The area has long been a popular “streetcar community” and is even home to the preeminent social club in CLT, the Charlotte Country Club. Adjacent NoDa is the city’s best arts district and is booming at a similar pace. The light rail will soon run through NoDa to bring young residents from Uptown to the area’s many restaurants, music venues, and townhomes.
