Why People Want to Live in Northwest Charlotte

Northwest Charlotte very broadly forms a big triangle, from I-85 in the south to 485 in the North to I-77 in the East. The biggest draw of the area is its lakes: Mountain Island Lake and of course, Lake Norman. Much of Charlotte’s explosive growth over the last decade has been concentrated in this direction as people seek to escape the immediate hustle and bustle of Uptown while retaining all the amenities of city life. There are entire communities and shopping destinations in Northwest Charlotte that make it a great place to live, eat, and work.

Northwest Charlotte abuts the lake communities of Huntersville and Cornelius. Access to Highway 16 makes it easy to drive up the west side of Lake Norman to the town of Hickory and the completed 485 loop connects the area to Charlotte Douglas International Airport, there’s a lot of undeveloped land still waiting to be explored in the Northwest. The US National Whitewater Center is based here near the banks of the Catawba River, several golf courses like Sunset Hills and Oak Hills are public for playing, and green spaces like Hornets Nest Park are always bustling. Most of the growth, though, is still concentrated around the lakes, particularly near the Southeastern tip of Lake Norman.

Features, Restaurants & Retail of Northwest Charlotte

Birkdale Village was one of the first huge developments in the Northwest Charlotte/Huntersville area to attract commuters. It is itself a planned community, a walkable shopping destination, and the foodie mecca of this part of the city. Northlake Mall is a bustling shopping center, too, located on the growing WT Harris Boulevard. The mall itself caters to luxury, modern buyers but several large shopping centers have sprung up nearby offering everything from big-box stores to hotels.

Mountain Island is its own subset community, mostly in Huntersville, anchored by the eponymously-named lake. There are several shopping and dining centers in this general area, but people who live here tend to spend most of their time driving to one of the larger nearby retail establishments or at the marinas. Two of Charlotte’s coolest destinations, Historic Latta Plantation and the Carolina Raptor Center, are located here.

Closer to Uptown, there’s a lot of growth near the airport in West Charlotte on roads like Old Down and Tuckaseegee. Johnson C. Smith University, a private, historically African American college, is located on the Northwestern side of Uptown and is the keystone for neighborhoods like Oaklawn, Smallwood, and Washington Heights. The University was actually established in 1867, so this part of town is already very established and offers some great historical architecture and homes.

What to Know About Houses for Sale in Northwest Charlotte

Looking to buy property on a lake in Charlotte? Northwest CLT is your best bet. Mountain Island Lake living is more affordable than Lake Norman, but both have lots in the way of new construction and traditional southern homes. Between Uptown and the lakes, new neighborhoods are popping up left and right, but it’s easy to find an older home with a sizeable lot, too. If living in a large planned community appeals to you, Birkdale and Northlake are both good options with variable homes, price-points, and neighborhoods.

Of course, the closer you get to Charlotte the more widely homes and home prices will vary. In Biddleville, for example, you can score a great craftsman-style fixer-upper while you may be able to buy raw land for building your dream home closer to Charlotte Douglas. In Northwest Charlotte, the possibilities are endless, so having a knowledgeable realtor by your side makes navigating the area easier.

In addition to the full list of Northwest Charlotte homes for sale listed above, you may also be interested in Northwest Charlotte ranch style homes, homes with a swimming pool, new construction, homes with the master BR on the main floor, or neighborhoods with a community pool, golf course, or are designed for over 55 active adults. Or, perhaps you're specifically looking for condos or townhomes in Northwest Charlotte.
