South Charlotte

Why People Want to Live in South Charlotte

South Charlotte is perhaps the most consistently desirable part of Charlotte to live in. The area boasts a great mix of urban development and residential living in addition to great public and private schools, lots of shopping and dining, and easy access to Uptown and the city’s highways. Some of the most popular areas within the “South Charlotte” designation include SouthPark, Myers ParkDilworthSouthend, and the greater Carolina Place area. Of course, there are dozens of smaller neighborhoods within this huge swath of Charlotte – Madison Park, Lansdowne, and Barclay Downs to name a few.

There’s also a lot of great green space in this densely-populated area. Freedom Park is Charlotte’s flagship public space, but the Little Sugar Creek Greenway, Park Road Park, and dozens of other public green spaces also make this area a great place to walk the dog, ride a bike, or raise kids. And if you love the links, these Charlotte golf communities are great options.

Features, Restaurants & Retail of South Charlotte

The density of retail in South Charlotte is what makes it such a desirable place to live. Beautiful SouthPark Mall is arguably the anchor development of the area, surrounded by neighborhoods and more retail on all sides. Nearby Phillips Place and Park Road Shopping Center offer a bounty of shopping, hotels, and restaurants, too.

Southend (on the “South End” of Uptown) has become one of the most popular places in the city for young professionals thanks to dozens of new apartment buildings and easy Light Rail access. South Boulevard offers many great restaurants as well as boutique shopping, spa services, and several breweries.

Dilworth was Charlotte’s first “streetcar suburb” and East Boulevard remains one of the city’s best places to meet. Upscale restaurants, clothiers, and perhaps the busiest Starbucks you’ve ever seen are hallmarks of the area which is flanked by gorgeously-restored craftsman homes.

Further down towards Pineville, NC, you’ll find lots of small shopping centers and office complexes. There are hundreds of fast-casual restaurants here to cater to the lunch crowd and also many of Charlotte’s best ethnic eateries. Carolina Place Mall (actually in Pineville) anchors the southernmost tip of this area.

What to Know About Houses for Sale in South Charlotte

Homes for sale in South Charlotte vary widely. Many of the city’s more established neighborhoods command upwards of $1,000,000; at the same time, it’s not hard to find a great fixer-upper in the area that can easily double in value with a little TLC. It’s relatively easy to find single-family homes, townhomes, and even condos in this part of Charlotte.

The further south you go from Uptown, the more likely you are to find a larger yard and a more established neighborhood. There is, of course, plenty of new builder development across all of Charlotte, and South Charlotte is no exception. Whether you’re looking for a historical home with lots of charm, new construction with no maintenance, or even a walkable townhome where you can live/eat/work, South Charlotte has it.
