Ballantyne, North Carolina

Why People Want to Live in Ballantyne

Ballantyne is perhaps the most popular and fastest-growing suburb of Charlotte. Less than 20 years ago the area at the intersection of Johnston and Ballantyne Commons was little more than empty fields; in the early 1990s developers turned the over 2,000 acres into a sprawling “mini-city,” complete with neighborhoods, schools, retail, restaurants, and parks. Although Ballantyne is still technically part of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County, a growing contingent of the area’s some 20,000+ residents want to incorporate and make Ballantyne its own city outright.

Ballantyne is desirable for many reasons. It’s incredibly family friendly and boasts some of the most concentrated upscale shopping outside of Southpark. The public schools in this part of Charlotte are consistently ranked highly, and amenities like the Ballantyne Hotel and Spa and Ballantyne Country Club mean for many residents, leaving the area just isn’t necessary. With many large companies calling Ballantyne home, some Charlotte residents with a reverse commute have chosen instead to pick up and move to the greater south Charlotte area.

Features, Restaurants & Retail of Ballantyne

The “neighborhood” of Ballantyne (the area is technically a “planned community”) is situated just south of I-485, just north of the South Carolina border. Its proximity to Waxhaw, Marvin, PinevilleFort Mill, Matthews and Weddington – all growing in their own right – only bolster this community’s many retail offerings. Ballantyne is dominated by large luxury shopping complexes like Stonecrest, Blakeney, Toringdon, and the Shoppes at Ardrey Kell that offer everything from outposts of popular Charlotte eateries to chain stores like Target and Banana Republic to movie theaters.

There are several curated outdoor areas for public use in Ballantyne including a bevy of semi-private and public golf courses. Ballantyne Village Commons is considered the hub of activity in Ballantyne, offering everything from upscale dining to a gym near dozens of towering office complexes. The landscape of Ballantyne is full of new and ongoing construction, much of it centered around new office space.

What to Know About Houses for Sale in Ballantyne

For the most part, Ballantyne is all about designated neighborhoods. Nearly every major builder has or has had a project in Ballantyne and huge developments throughout the area offer amenities like swim clubs, golf course homes, tennis courts, gated communities, and more. There are literally thousands of people moving to Ballantyne every single year.

Home styles in south Charlotte and Ballantyne in particular vary. There are lots of traditional two-story brick homes to be found here in addition to modern craftsman, European style, and stucco builds. You’d be hard-pressed to find a home for sale in Ballantyne that is more than 20 years old. Although yard sizes tend to be bigger in Ballantyne than in Charlotte metro, they’re getting smaller as neighborhoods are getting denser. Ballantyne’s growth isn’t showing any signs of slowing down and home prices here are soaring. If you’re looking to move to Ballantyne, it will probably never be less expensive than it is now.
