Waxhaw, North Carolina

Waxhaw, located about 20 miles from downtown Charlotte, is known for its small-town vibe and large-acre properties. Located in Union County, it’s also home to some of the highest-ranked public schools in the state, part of Union County School District. With a population of just over 10,000, people are clamoring to raise their families here, causing Waxhaw to become one of the fastest-growing regions around Charlotte.

The area takes its name from the Native American tribe that once lived here. These beautiful rolling hills and abundant woodlands are near the site where gold was first discovered in the Carolinas, triggering an infamous gold rush that grew the area until the California gold rush overshadowed it. The first European settlers came to this area in the mid-1800s, mostly Scots, both Irish and German. In time, the arrival of the railroad, which connected the area to Atlanta’s markets, and the growth of the textile industry resulted in Waxhaw becoming well-established.

As textile jobs began to disappear, Waxhaw shifted its focus and became a center for fine dining and antiques. Careful and persistent development in the historic town center has resulted in numerous shops and dining establishments, casual and upscale. The entire Waxhaw Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Nearby Cane Creek Park, a state park, offers more than 1000 acres of recreation, camping, hiking, and more. Area events include the annual Queen’s Cup and a family-friendly Fourth of July Parade!

Homes for sale in Waxhaw tend to be luxurious, including very private estates and executive homes. A variety of architectural styles can be seen here, with a penchant for elegant stone and brick. Homes here feature luxury appointments and amenities in gated communities, some featuring clubhouses, tennis courts, fitness centers, walking trails, and more. Waxhaw has come a long way from its humble beginnings when European settlers first arrived here, but it still maintains the natural beauty that drew them here—and continues to draw others today.
